Ashton had a grammar school and a C of E Secondary School but where did RC senior pupils go before they built St Edmund Arrowsmith School in the early 60's

On the 1914 map, the building at the traffic lights on Liverpool Road which is now the Ashwood Residential Care Home is listed as a St Oswald's school LINK as are two other buildings further down Liverpool Road on the opposite side LINK and the houses there are there now are now addressed as being in 'The Old School Place'

There weren’t any secondary schools with a religious standing in Ashton until 1961.
The two secondary schools were the Grammar School and the Central School, later known as Cansfield.
In 1961 a catholic high school, Edmund Arrowsmith, opened

Quaint old building wasn't it. (The school further down Liverpool Road.) I think there is a photo in 'Album' section.

Used to attend Scouts (First Ashton, Lord Gerrard's) at scout hut just beyond the school. I remember, I was in 'Curlew' patrol. I used to be able to make the curlew call.

Also used to go to Judo at what is now the Ashwood place.

Joe Maplin, I'm interested in what getting 'poled' is, A program I watched on on telly recently about different genders mentioned, " there are people with a hole and people with a pole and, that is it " I'm baffled by it all,,,

Nothing so devious Tom
The big lads would get the new starters in a figure four leg lock around a pole, shove you down so that your own weight locked you in.
Some kids were there for ages.

Pole joke,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The 2012 Olympic games and a German athlete carrying a long pole is walking up to the security gates of the stadium,, The security guards asks.

" are you a Pole vaulter ?"

The German answers, " Nine, I am not a Pole and mine name iz not Walter"
